The new school year is approaching, which means freshmen are getting ready to start their first year of college, and with this comes many “firsts”. First time living independently, first time being far away from home, first time cooking and cleaning for yourself every day… and first time living in a dorm! But whether you’re a first-timer or a returning student, this blog post is for you.
We all remember the good old days of dorm room living, and keeping it tidy and organized is one of the most important things to consider when back to school shopping. With such a small space, you want to be sure that it isn’t cluttered or messy—especially if you are sharing a room.
We’re here to help and provide you with TEN dorm room cleaning must-haves. From organizational items to the best inexpensive cleaning supplies, we’ve got you covered!
There really is nothing quite like a clean room, and when it comes to a dorm, your bedroom occasionally doubles as your study space. And who can study and focus in a messy room?! Not us, that’s for sure!
The first item that is an absolute must for all dorm-rooms are these bins that roll under your bed. They’re also great for fitting inside of closet spaces if you don’t have a big enough space! Clothes, school supplies, shoes, you name it! You can buy these at any large retailer like Walmart or Target. Two words: Life. Changer!
We honestly can’t help but mention how perfect Beddy’s are for dorm rooms. If you’re looking for quick, easy bedding that will help keep a room organized and tidy, Beddy’s are for you. And there are styles to match any room! They’re cozy, cute, and super easy to make in the morning… which means there aren’t any excuses for not making your bed before an 8am class ;)

But don’t take it from us! This is what reviewer "Collegemom" has to say about Beddy’s for dorm rooms: “My daughter enjoys the ease of making her Beddy’s in her college dorm room. It makes it easy to keep her bed neat which helps her stay focused on school. She found Beddy's herself and asked for it to help keep her easily organized with her dorm room looking nice. It is also soft, which is great for her extra sensitive skin."
And you can try Beddy’s risk-free today with our 14-day money back guarantee, so if you don’t like it, you can return it; but we know you’re going to LOVE it!
The third item on our list of must-haves is nothing other than fels-naptha! This was included on our spring cleaning favorites post, and it truly is an essential. And did we mention that it is literally SO cheap?! Fels-naptha is a laundry bar soap that is typically used for pre-treating stains, but there are seriously so many other great uses for this inexpensive bar of heaven, and here’s just a few: cleaning showers, sinks, DIY dish soap, and making whites whiter… we’ll take 10, thanks!
Next, we have clorox wipes. This should be self-explanatory, but with living in such a small space, having so many friends (and sometimes strangers) over, and potentially living with people you don’t know… you’ll want these. They’re perfect for sanitizing literally anything and everything. Whether you’re a germaphobe or not, just take our advice and add these to your cleaning supply list!
Fifth: Febreeze/air freshener. Tight spaces tend to hold onto smells, so this is an essential. Plus, nothing is better than spraying your room with air freshener right after cleaning it. So fresh and clean!
Next, Meyer’s every day cleaning spray. This is one of our favorites, and it’s perfect for college students since it’s a natural all-purpose cleaner that you can use for mostly everything. It smells so good and fresh, and will help keep all of the surfaces in your space clean and germ-free.
Seventh, we have shoe deodorizer spray. Now, let us explain this one—going along with the fourth item, air freshener, shoe deodorizers play an important role in keeping a space smelling fresh and clean. Especially when that space is as small as a dorm room. Because of the small space, any smells can stink up the room fast. And trust us, roommate or not, you don’t want your room smelling like stinky feet. Yuck!
This is another one of our favorites: magic erasers! They’re called magic for a reason, seriously. Magic erasers are great for the nitty and gritty things: cleaning wall marks/stains, showers/tubs, microwaves, and so much more. Magic erasers are an essential for every cleaning supply list.
Ninth, cleaning bowl tablets. Let’s be honest: what college student actually wants to scrub a toilet? They’re so busy with schoolwork and social events, who has time for that?! ;) These bowl tablets are the perfect option for those who just really don’t want to scrub their toilet. And we really can’t blame them.
Lastly, nothing but a good ole’ Swiffer. The best thing about the Swiffer is that it’s so versatile and is compact! It’s a great alternative to the traditional mop, because it’s way less messy and is perfect for smaller spaces. Your roommates will LOVE you for it, too. Clean floors, here we come!
And there you have it: a complete dorm room cleaning essentials list. We promise your room will be better organized, smell fresh, and stay tidy with these items. Oh, and good luck this year!
