11 Signs It’s Time for a New Mattress

A great mattress is the true hero of a good night’s sleep, and whether we like it or not, there comes a time when we need to say goodbye to our mattress and begin the search for a new one.

If you find yourself waking up feeling more restless than relaxed, it’s probably time to say goodbye to the old and hello to the new!

In this blog, we’re going to break down the top eleven signs that your mattress may be past its prime. From poor sleep quality to uneven support, there are a number of tells you can keep an eye out for that help you to know when it’s time for a new mattress.

1. Visible Wear and Tear

If you’re seeing any visible issues with your mattress, such as tears, lumps, or indents, this means it’s time to start looking for a new one.

Perhaps you can see through to the foam or springs within the mattress, or maybe there has been uneven wear and use on the mattress that is causing a loss of proper support. When this starts happening, it can lead to aches and pains, especially in your neck, shoulders, and back.

Before it gets to that, you’re going to want a new mattress to save yourself the pain and trouble!

2. You Wake Up Feeling Sore

If you start waking up feeling sore and less rested than you deserve, is the culprit that you’re feeling any sort of pain? Your old mattress could be to blame.

It could be that lumps are starting to form in the mattress, or maybe it’s starting to dip in the middle. A good mattress should provide support all throughout the night, and as soon as you find that’s not the case, it’s time to say goodbye.

You deserve a mattress that helps you to wake feeling rested! That means having a mattress with the proper support.

3. Your Sleep Quality is Suffering

There are a number of things that, when added together, contribute to your sleep quality. Some don’t have to do with your mattress, such as noise level or light exposure.

However, there are other factors that are directly impacted by the quality of your mattress!

Some of those factors include:

  • Sleep duration: How long are you sleeping? Is your mattress keeping you from being able to sleep for large periods of time?

  • REM sleep: Are you able to get deep sleep?

  • Comfort level: Are you comfortable in bed, or are there elements of your mattress that are making you uncomfortable?

  • Absence of pain: Forget uncomfortable, do you experience pain when you lay on your mattress, or in the morning when you wake up? A mattress with poor support can quickly lead to discomfort and even pain.

  • Nighttime disruptions: Does your partner toss and turn, or maybe they snore? These disruptions can be caused by their own discomfort when sleeping on a bad mattress.

If you struggle with even one of these, your sleep quality is likely suffering, and with replacing your mattress, these challenges will lessen or even go away completely.

4. Unwanted Noises

When you climb in bed at the end of the night, are there any creaks, squeaks, or other concerning sounds coming from your mattress?

This is a sign of wear and tear. It could even mean that there are pieces inside your mattress that are breaking or broken, and no one wants to sleep on a broken mattress!

5. It’s Over 7-10 Years Old

The average mattress will last somewhere between seven and ten years. After that, you’re going to see some of the wear and tear we’ve covered, as well as lowered comfort levels and hygiene concerns.

A good rule of thumb is to anticipate purchasing a new mattress once your current one reaches this landmark!

Looking for a mattress with replaceable elements can work wonders with this! With the ZipLuxe Mattress, you can replace the springs and comfort layer after ten years, making this a true forever mattress.

6. Sleeping Better Elsewhere

Have you ever gone on a trip and found yourself thinking “Wow, I slept so well here! Way better than at home.” Sure, this could be the sign of simply being excited for a trip or relaxing a bit by being away from your normal routine. However, it could also be a sign that your mattress at home is not up to par anymore.

If you find yourself frequently feeling this way after sleeping in a hotel bed or guest room, this may be a sign that it’s time to replace your mattress at home.

7. Frequent Allergy Symptoms

If allergy symptoms seem to flare up as soon as you lie down or wake up, your mattress might be to blame.

Over time, mattresses can collect allergens like dust mites and mold, which can trigger sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. Even with regular cleaning, older mattresses can bring on these issues.

If your allergies are getting in the way of your sleep, it might be time to say goodbye to your old mattress and hello to one that keeps your allergy symptoms at bay!

8. Uneven Support or Sagging

Do you wake up in the morning to find that your mattress is sagging beneath you? Over time, the materials in your mattress are going to start to break down and become weak. If it’s not properly rotated or supported, it can happen even faster.

9. You've Gained or Lost Weight

Weight changes can affect your mattress in more ways

than you might think! A shift in weight can put different pressure on your mattress, causing wear and tear like sagging or dips in areas that support the most weight.

On the flip side, if you’ve lost weight, your mattress might suddenly feel firmer than it used to.

So if you’ve experienced a change in your weight and you’re feeling it in your mattress, it may be time for an update!

10. You Feel The Springs Poking Through

The minute you start feeling elements of your mattress protruding through the layers, it’s time to start mattress shopping! This is especially true if you start to feel the springs.

Depending on what kind of mattress you have, the springs may be poking through several other layers within the mattress. You will be so happy to get that fresh mattress, completely free of springs poking through and bugging you in the night!
