How To Remove Blood From Sheets

There's nothing worse than waking up to find blood on your fresh, clean sheets. Bloodstains are always a real challenge, whether it's a nosebleed, unexpected spotting, or your time of the month. The worst part? Bloodstains don't always come out after being thrown in the wash.

We put together a step-by-step guide on how to remove blood from sheets so you can confidently scrub away the bloodstains and maintain the integrity of your favorite set of sheets. Here's what you need to do to remove blood stains from sheets:

Step One: Remove the Sheets

So, you wake up to find period stains or spotting on a fresh pair of sheets. Don't panic! Instead, gently remove your sheets from your bed as quickly as possible. The last thing you want is the bloodstain to get on your mattress.

Step Two: Rinse With Cold Water

The first thing to do is rinse the sheets in cold water where you see the stain. The cold water will help remove blood from the sheets better than warm water because it won't let the blood settle into the fabric.

If you wait too long or don't notice the stain right away, it may be harder to remove from your sheets – but not impossible.

Step Three: Avoid Scrubbing

When it comes to learning how to get period blood out of sheets, the one thing you want to remember is never to scrub or rub the stain. Instead, blot at the bloodstain with a cold washcloth, which will help remove any excess blood and prevent the stain from spreading.

Step Four: Soak in Cold Water

Once you've blotted away the excess blood, you'll want to soak your sheets in cold water. Let the sheets sit in the water for at least 30 minutes. If the stain is dry or old, you may need to let it soak in cold water for a few hours or overnight.

Step Five: Go in With Hydrogen Peroxide and Water

The store has many stain-fighting solutions, but nothing beats old-fashioned hydrogen peroxide – a household staple safe for all colored fabrics, which you may already have at home.

Add hydrogen peroxide to the mix after your blood stain sheets have soaked in the water for at least 30 minutes, which will help break down the blood in the sheets.

Step Six: Add to The Wash

The next thing you'll want to do to remove blood from sheets is to add your sheets into the washer. Wash your sheets like you'd normally do on a normal wash cycle.

Step Seven: Let Your Sheets Air Dry

Instead of throwing them into the dryer, air them out to dry them. Adding your sheets to the dryer can worsen the stain if you aren't careful. If the stain is still there after they've dried, you'll want to repeat the process.

Remove Blood From Sheets With Confidence

Period stains, spotting, or any other mishaps are nothing to be ashamed of. Learning how to get period blood out of sheets will give you the peace of mind you need anytime Mother Nature decides to run its course. If hydrogen peroxide doesn't work, consider a different stain remover, like lemon juice, vinegar, salt, or baking soda.
